Practice Exercise: Solving a Logic Puzzle with Chain-of-Thought
Objective: To observe firsthand how Chain-of-Thought (CoT) prompting improves the accuracy,
clarity, and transparency of AI responses compared to a simple, direct prompt. You will use a classic
logic puzzle for this task.

The Logic Puzzle:
Three friends, Alex, Ben, and Clara, each have a different profession and a different pet.
• Professions: Doctor, Engineer, Lawyer
• Pets: Dog, Cat, Parrot
Here are the clues:
1. The engineer does not own the cat.
2. Alex is not the lawyer.
3. The doctor owns the parrot.
4. Clara is the lawyer.

Your Task:
Your goal is to solve this puzzle using Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini. For each of the three models,
you will perform the task twice using two different prompts.
Step 1: Use the Simple Prompt (Before CoT) Copy and paste the following prompt into each AI
model:
Solve the following logic puzzle and tell me each person's profession and pet.
People: Alex, Ben, Clara Professions: Doctor, Engineer, Lawyer Pets: Dog, Cat, Parrot
Clues:
1. The engineer does not own the cat.
2. Alex is not the lawyer.
3. The doctor owns the parrot.
4. Clara is the lawyer.
Step 2: Use the Chain-of-Thought Prompt (With CoT) After getting the first response, start a new
chat and copy and paste the following CoT prompt into each AI model:
Let's solve this logic puzzle by thinking step-by-step. First, list all the people, professions, and pets.
Then, analyze each clue one by one to deduce the relationships. Explain your reasoning at each step
until you have determined the correct profession and pet for each person.

Clues:
1. The engineer does not own the cat.
2. Alex is not the lawyer.
3. The doctor owns the parrot.
4. Clara is the lawyer.
Step 3: Analyze and Share Your Outputs Observe the outputs from both prompts across all three
models.
• Did the simple prompt give you the correct answer? Was it easy to verify?
• How did the output from the CoT prompt differ? Was the reasoning clear and easy to follow?
• Share (copy and paste) the most detailed and well-reasoned output you received from one
of the models using the CoT prompt.
